Marney’s career has been devoted to the conservation of British countryside and wildlife.

In 1968 Marney joined The Nature Conservancy (later The Institute of Terrestial Ecology) where she worked for 21 years as an ecologist, researching ways of improving the management of nature reserves, in particular, for rare species of butterflies. During her time at ITE, she published over 30 scientific papers, chapters for books and articles for the national press and magazines

In 1988 Marney set up a specialist nursery growing wildflowers for the retail market. Marney's knowledge of plants and how and where they grow, helped her in developing a career in garden design. Her first show garden, at Hampton Court, in 1995 won 'Best in Show'.

Following her success at Hampton Court, she has designed gardens for clients throughout the UK, as well as working in Europe, the USA and Japan. She is widely acclaimed as one of the leading designers in this country who pioneered the environmental movement in garden design. Though happy to work on small, local projects, Marney's clients have included the RSPB, Kew, Royal Parks, Disney, The Highways Agency and Anglian Water.
